Hurricane season
Ready for whatever the season brings
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. Here’s how to prepare your home, family and business — and what to do if a storm hits.
How storm-ready are you?

Let’s get started — every item counts.
Tick off what you’ve done. It takes two minutes — and it could save you weeks after a storm.
Your storm guide, step by step
Before the season and before a storm
- 1 Review your policy with your agent: what is covered, your sums insured and your hurricane deductible.
- 2 Photograph or film every room, your roof, outbuildings and valuables. Store the files online as well as on your phone.
- 3 Keep policy documents, IDs and important papers in a waterproof bag, with copies in the cloud.
- 4 Fit or test your shutters, trim trees, clear gutters and bring in or tie down anything that could fly.
- 5 Pack an emergency kit: drinking water for several days, non-perishable food, medicines, a torch, batteries, a radio, power banks and some cash.
- 6 Know your nearest shelter and evacuation route, fill your car’s tank and agree a family plan.
- 7 Boat owners: check your marina’s hurricane plan and the hurricane terms of your boat policy early.
While the storm passes
- 1 Stay indoors, away from windows and glass doors, in the strongest room of the building.
- 2 Follow official updates from your local meteorological and disaster-management services.
- 3 Don’t be fooled by the calm of the eye — the wind returns from the other direction.
- 4 Switch off electricity and gas if officials tell you to, and keep phones charged for emergencies.
- 5 Text instead of calling where you can, to keep networks free for emergency services.
After the storm
- 1 Wait for the official all-clear before going outside.
- 2 Stay away from fallen power lines, damaged buildings and flood water.
- 3 Photograph all damage before you clean up or make repairs.
- 4 Make temporary repairs to stop further damage (for example, cover a broken window) and keep every receipt.
- 5 Keep damaged items, or photograph them clearly, until your claim has been assessed.
- 6 Report your claim to NAGICO as soon as you can — online, by phone or through your agent.

Extra help when a storm hits
